Hewlett-Packard release a new convertible laptop called HP EliteBook 2740p which is similat to HP EliteBook 2730p but more features. It’s powered by Intel Intel Core i5/i7 processor, up to 8GB of RAM, 160GB/250GB hard drive, and optional 80GB/160GB SSD.

HP EliteBook 2740p convertible tablet has 12-inch multi-touch display with 1280×800 resolution and pens supports, Qualcomm Gobi 3G modem, WiFi (b/g or a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, a 2-megapixel webcam, and a 6-cell 44WHr battery with enabling up to 5 hours in use.

Switchable Graphics Technology from Nvidia

Notebooks with switchable graphics have been shipping for years, but they haven't lived up to user expectations. Nvidia hopes to change that with their new Optimus technology.
Optimus promises to make things much easier. When the system detects a 3D application or video (if it's decoded using the DirectX Video Acceleration plugin, as most are), the GPU simply turns on. When you're done with the 3D app or video, it goes back to the integrated GPU. There's no screen blanking, no buttons to hit or switches to flip. The technology promises discrete GPU power when you need it, integrated graphics when you don't, automatically.

Google Text-To-Speech API

There’s no official API for the text-to-speech service. But Weston Ruter noticed that anyone can access the service in the same way Google does: “Looking at the Firebug Net panel for where this TTS data was coming from, I saw that the speech audio is in MP3 format and is queried via a simple HTTP GET (REST) request: "http://translate.google.com/translate_tts?tl=en&q=text”

Translation: just change the URL to whatever you want it to say and you’ll get back a MP3 file.
This is English only for now, and its limited to 100 characters. But unless Google shuts this down, third party applications can now use this in any creative way they want. Have at it.

Add "Safe Mode" to Boot menu in XP

There are several reasons why you may wish to boot your system into Safe Mode:

• in order to install some drivers correctly and reliably
• to carry out housekeeping tasks such as disk defragmentation
• to perform any number of trouble-shooting tasks

The traditional way of booting to Safe Mode is to press the F8 key during the boot process, to display a list of available boot options.
You can add safe mode option directly to your boot menu by modifying boot.ini file...
boot.ini is usually located in root of C drive and is hidden file.... If you are not intrested in changing settings to display hidden files just right-click on "MY COMPUTER" and choose Properties.On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button, which bring up the Startup and Recovery window.Click the Edit button; the boot.ini file will be opened in Notepad. Before editing it is recommended to save that file with other name so that it may be easy to restore
Then... locate the [Operating Systems] section.
Copy the entry beneath this that relates to your default operating system, and paste it on the line below.
Add "/safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog" to the end of the line you just copied. If you want networking support, then change "minimal" to "network".
Your Boot.ini file must be look soomething like this after editing..

GOOGLE closing off support for IE6

This has not been the greatest start to the year for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser.Days after news of the latest security flaw in Internet Explorer, Google is phasing out support for IE6 for two of its Google Apps products, Docs and Sites.
For both the consumer and enterprise versions of Google Docs and Sites, the only browsers that will be fully compatible are Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+, Mozilla Firefox 3.0+, Google Chrome 4.0+ and Safari 3.0+. The phase out will take place beginning March 1. While you’ll still be able to access Docs and Sites from IE6, you will have restricted functionality and many features won’t work, making the applications for the most part useless. We hear that Google will be phasing out IE6 support for the remainder of Google’s major products, including Gmail and Calendar, over the coming year. This isn’t Google’s first move to phases out IE6 functionality for its products. Last July, the search giant began phasing out YouTube support for the Microsoft browser. For users of IE6, the online video site began pointing to ‘modern’ browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.5 as alternatives. A similar prompt will now take place on Docs and Sites for users who are browsing from IE6.

YOUTUBE introducing HTML5 Supported Videos

 YouTube launched a simple demo of an HTML5-based video player.
HTML5 is a new web standard that is gaining popularity rapidly and adds many new features to your web experience. Most notably for YouTube users, HTML5 includes support for video and audio playback. This means that users with an HTML5 compatible browser, and support for the proper audio and video codecs can watch a video without needing to download a browser plugin.
 Support for HTML5 is an early experiment, and there are some limitations. HTML5 on YouTube doesn't support videos with ads, captions, or annotations and it requires a browser that supports both the video tag and h.264 encoded video (currently that means Chrome, Safari, and ChromeFrame on Internet Explorer). We will be expanding the capabilities of the player in the future, so get ready for new and improved versions in the months to come.

This will enable HTML5 video for your browser, provided that it's one of the browsers mentioned above and fits in with the parameters we already referenced. IPad does not support Adobe FLASH

One of the disappointing (if unsurprising) part of Apple’s launch of its iPad tablet computer was the absence of Flash, Adobe’s technology for web video and other media.

It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers. Unlike many other ebook readers using the ePub file format, consumers will not be able to access ePub content with Apple's DRM technology on devices made by other manufacturers.  And without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web.
If you want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab -- not to mention the millions of other sites on the web -- you'll be out of luck.

The ultra-small revolution has begun, thanks to scientists who claim to have developed a laser that can communicate in several wavelengths at once on a computer chip, boosting speed.
The on-chip light source will be a key to enabling the simultaneous transmission of multiple data channels either on-chip or between chips in a single optical fibre, each at a different wavelength.

The device, based on high index doped silica glass, is low loss and has a high degree of manufacturability and design flexibility.

And, this makes it an ideal integrated multiple wave length source not just to improve computing power, but for a wide range of applications including telecommunications, high- precision broadband sensing and spectroscopy, metrology, and even attosecond physics, say the scientists.

The findings have been published in the latest edition of the ‘Nature Photonics’ journal.

Watch IPL live on YOUTUBE

The IPL's 2010 season will be broadcast live on YouTube, following an arrangement between the league and Google, owners of the internet channel. The deal - under which all 60 games will be shown live or on a short delay on a dedicated YouTube channel - will apply across the world, except in the USA, which will have re-broadcast options.

The agreement gives Google exclusive online rights for IPL content for two years, with both parties sharing revenues from sponsorships and advertising.

Plug-in Check for Better Security

Firefox 3.6 can now detect whether any of your installed browser plug-ins (Flash, etc...) are out of date. This is importaant because Cybercriminals often use bugs in outdated versions of  some plugins--particularly Flash and QuickTime--to attack your PC

Full-Screen Video

You can now watch certain types of videos in full screen with Firefox 3.6. If the video is in the Oog Vorbis format, you can right-click the video and select an option to see it in full-screen.

Firefox 3.5 was a good deal faster than earlier Firefox versions. Mozilla claims that Firefox 3.6 is even faster, with improvements to JavaScript performance in particular, which should result in faster load times for Web pages and Web apps. Firefox also improves support for some of the latest Web design technologies, which should make it easier for designers to create better, more attractive sites.

Microsoft knows about zero-day flaw in September

A critical security vulnerability that hackers used to breach Google, Adobe and other large U.S. companies was disclosed to Microsoft last September, not last week as previously believed.
The software giant had intended to release a patch for the flaw in February, five months after learning about it, but had to speed up that plan and release it this week in the wake of news that Google and others had been hacked through the flaw.

Patch for zero-day flaw in Microsoft IE

A critical zero-day flaw in Internet Explorer was exploited as part of the attack on Google and other companies, according to both Microsoft and McAfee.
The flaw allows for a Web-based attack against IE 6 SP 1 on Windows 2000, along with IE 7 and 8 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. According to Microsoft's security advisory, the company has only seen active attacks against IE 6 so far.
The invalid pointer reference flaw allows for remote code execution, according to Microsoft, which means that viewing a malicious Web site could allow an attacker to execute any command on a vulnerable computer. Typically that would mean installing a Trojan or other malicious software. According to the bulletin, IE's Protected Mode on Vista and later versions of Windows mitigates the threat, which could also be leveraged by a banner ad.
According to Microsoft, “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.”

GERMANY says 'NO' to IE

In the wake of the cyber attacks on Google China  and other large companies in recent weeks and the exposure that Internet Explorer has a security weakness that the attackers exploited. Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security has made a public announcement to its population to avoid IE versions 6, 7 and 8.
Microsoft feared that other countries would follow suit and quickly issued a statement saying the risks were low. But German authorities disagree and say that no updates issued by Microsoft can make IE safe to use.

7stacks is an easy to use, free app that lets Windows 7 (and Vista and XP) users have "stacks" of icons in their Taskbar (in 7) or QuickLaunch Toolbar (in Vista and XP). By using stacks, users can reduce icon clutter, and combine a group of related icons into a single icon. For instance, if you use application suites such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, or Adobe CS4, you can have all the suite's icons combined into one icon!
You can also use it to browse and access documents within a folder very quickly. Usually, when you want to edit a series of frequently used documents, you'd have to either launch the app, and go to File|Open, or open the (My) Computer icon and go into your (My) Documents folder and pick the file you want. Firefox 3.7 changed to 4.0

Mozilla has dropped the schedule of Firefox 3.7 and will release Firefox 4.0 instead of firefox 3.7 after Firefox 3.6. So Firefox 4.0 will come most probably at the end of this year or early 2011. Firefox 3.6, codenamed Namoroka. Development for this version started on December 1, 2008 and it is planned for release in early 2010. This release will use the new Gecko 1.9.2 rendering engine.Firefox 4.0 has been tentatively scheduled to use the Gecko 1.9.4 rendering engine and will offer a new user interface and multi-touch gesture support.

According to Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox.

Rather than add features to Firefox only in once- or twice-a-year upgrades, Mozilla will quietly insert some functionality via its regular security updates, which appear every four to six weeks. That means Firefox 3.7, which was slated for a second quarter release, has been dropped from the development schedule. We learned an awful lot about what slows down our schedule, and that will help us plan future releases.

USB 3.0 Finally Arrives

The beauty of USB 3.0 is its backward compatibility with USB 2.0; you need a new cable and new host adapter (or, one motherboard that supports USB 3.0) to achieve USB 3.0, but you can still use the device on a USB 2.0 port and achieve typical USB 2.0 performance. In reducing some overhead requirements of USB (now, the interface only transmits data to the link and device that need it, so devices can go into low power state when not needed), the new incarnation now uses one-third the power of USB 2.0.

Improvement offered by USB 3.0 is dramatic --  10X speed over existing USB 2.0 hardware. Data transfer rate of USB 2.0 was aroundl 480Mbps theoretically , while USB 3.0 can theoretically handle up to 5Gbps.(the capacity of the drive is not considered here..).
