Visa Reject for the most absurd reason.(need help)
This was at Chennai consulate 9:00 appointment.
My Engg Aggre-57.45%(1-8) VTU university.
Gre-1280 (V-560 Q-720)
Toefl -90 (screwed it up because I had internals (test) the day before and external exams the day after. Was not in the right state of mind.
backlog- 1 (6th sem) cleared it immediately in the next attempt.
Here in our university, on getting a backlog and clearing it, one gets another marks card specifically on this account. And in first attempt marks are included in the marks card which also includes all the other subjects marks as well. Instead of having 2 different marks cards our university also provides the option of consolidating the 2 marks card into one with the latter marks of the backlog and specifying pass for all subs with the same total as the first attempt. This is one kind of consolidation of marks card.
There is also another way of consolidating, in this kind one can include the details of all the semester such as sub name, marks obtained and no of attempts.
And when it comes to financial details-
>I have with me a education loan sanction letter of 20 lakhs from Canara bank.
>I have a bank transaction history of past 6 months of my fathers savings bank account. With less than 5K in savings.
>Have a fixed deposit of 13 lakhs certificate.( which was mentioned in bank statement).
>Have a certificate of stock holdings of 10 lakhs in dad's name and 4 lakhs in mom's name.
My counselor had arranged all the docs for me. He had a acad doc set which included a set of 1-8 sem marks card (in this, the consolidated marks card of 6th sem was kept) and i also carried the other 2 marks cards of the same.
I was advised to show them only on being questioned.
Now here goes my interview-
African american women ( had heard a lot about her and how much she loves to reject)
Me- Good morning ma'am
Vo- no reaction and does not even look at me.
Me- I slipped to her all the docs that were put into the blue folder.

contd
Vo- (goes thru the docs for like 30 secs) and says " can i see your individual marks cards".

me- since all the docs were set, I gave it to her in a sec.

Vo- goes thru all the sem marks in 10 secs and points out that the 6th was a consolidated one and retold that she had asked for individual marks cards.

Me- I instantaneously told her that i had a back log in 6th and cleared it in the subsequent attempt and pulled out and gave her the other 2 marks card of the same.

Vo- on looking at them she started accusing me of hiding this information because i had a backlog and asked me 2-3 times why i lied to her.

Me- I told her that they were individual semester marks cards and that was what she asked for. And i kept saying no every time she asked y i lied to her. She did not me chance to explain to her about the misunderstanding.

Vo- Then she said as to y i told her a ball faced lie on her face and said that she would refuse my visa. (all this while she did not listen to anything i said and did not give me chance to talk either)
Then the woman said that the next time i apply and advised to me not to tell the truth. she also said that my grades were good and had only one backlog.

Me- Was in a state of shock and left the place immediately with the 214(b) form that she gave.
------------
My intention was this at all. All of this happened in less than 2 mins. I was not even asked which uni i was goin to. And none of the other docs where seen. It was not my fault at all.

The university I have chosen is NYU-poly and with a scholarship of $5000 per yr.
The i20 amt being $ 33,070. Start date being 1st Sep.

I have elaborated the entire episode and bugged you all i.e. if you reached till this point.

As I am to trying for the second time, can anyone be magnanimous enough to guide me through this process. What are my chances for the second time? Any help in regard to this, is greatly appreciated. I can be contacted on my mob no-9741411992 and email id being- sand0987@gmail.com. Thank you

About F1 visa ........

Hi friends..... here i am going to explain about the American Consulates and F1 visa issues.
F1 visa (student visa) is non-immigrant type of visa. A non-immigrant visa is most frequently a business, student or specialty worker travel document that permits you to travel to the United States during the validity of the visa to accomplish a specific purpose, such as visiting, studying or working in a specialty job.
You can attend anyone of the four American consulates for visa interview. USA has four main consulates in India. Those are at Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata. Always it is better to attend at the nearest consulate for your native place even though you have chances to attend for visa interview at other consulates. Click here to see the four consulates of USA

Most non-U.S. citizens who wish to study in the United States will seek an F-1 (non-immigrant) student visa, but there are other visa types that are sometimes authorized for those who study in the U.S. Here is a short description of the different visa types that involve study:
• F-1, or Student Visa: This visa is the most common for those who wish to engage in academic studies in the United States. It is for people who want to study at an accredited U.S. college or university or to study English at a university or intensive English language institute.
• J-1, or Exchange Visitor: This visa is for people who will be participating in an exchange visitor program in the U.S. The "J" visa is for educational and cultural exchange programs.
• M-1, or Student Visa: This visa is for those who will be engaged in non-academic or vocational study or training at an institution in the U.S.

In order to apply for a visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate, you must first have a SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System)-generated document (either an I-20 or DS-2019) issued by a U.S. college or university or Department of State-designated sponsor organization. You will be required to submit this form when you apply for a visa. The U.S. academic institution or program sponsor will provide you with the appropriate SEVIS-generated form only when you have been academically admitted to the institution or accepted as a participant in an exchange program. The institution or program sponsor will also send you additional information about applying for the appropriate visa, as well as other guidance about beginning your academic program in the United States.

US Embassy visa Procedure

First of all you need to have an appointment to attend visa interview. All the visa interviews will be conducted at American consulates.
Try to arrive 30 minutes earlier to visa interview time. As you enter the consulate , a guard will search you and your bags for suspicious objects. You need to show you HDFC bank receipts at the entrance of the consulate.
Then after moving some distance in there will be another security check point. Security people will check you again.
In the next point to the Security check you will be given seating. At this point you need to wait until you are called. Here your I20, GRE/TOEFL score cards, DS-forms will be taken and employees over there set all of the them in right way in a Folder and they give you the folder to you.
Next you can proceed to the main hall where the visa interviews goes on. As you enter the main Hall you will be sent the Finger Print section where you need to give your finger prints.
Now again you will be given seating. This is where all the action is. From the seating position you will see some counters where the people stand in Queues in front of each counter. Each and every counter has a Visa Office. Mostly all visa officers are Americans. You can listen to the questions asked by visa officers (while the interview is going on for other applicants) from your seating.
Next you will be sent to one of the visa counters where you will be interviewed with visa Visa Officer. You and Visa officer will be separated by a Glass wall. You have to give him the documents from the gap at bottom of the glass wall. You interview may take 5-30 minutes based on the visa officer mood and your answering capability.
If visa Officer would like to give you visa he will keep your passport with him and the passport with visa stamp will be couriered to you after 2-3 days.
Here is one interesting thing about F1visa interview. You might think some thing like - you will given a seat and you have to sit in front of visa officer and he will ask you questions. But the actually there is nothing like that. You just need to stand in visa interview infront of visa officer.

How to Prepare for Visa Interview.....

When applying for an F-1 visa the applicant needs to show the following:
• Strong home ties to your country
• Intent to return home after studies and Practical Training have been completed.
• continuing students only need to demonstrate maintenance of F-1 status (continuous full time enrollment, no work without authorization.)
Before the interview prepare your answers to the following questions:
What are your home country ties?
• show that you or family members own property
• show that there is a job waiting for you after graduation
• show that family members remain at home and have not immigrated to the United States
• show that you have completed any required military service if you are subject to such requirements
Are you prepared for your education?
• show that your language skills are adequate for study in a US university
• show that you have been a serious student before coming to the US
Are you a serious student? (especially for continuing students)
• show that you are getting good grades (have a transcript ready)
• show that you are continuously enrolled as a full time student (have a transcript ready)
• if you have received authorization for a reduced courseload, be prepared to show photocopies and answer questions about this
• show that you have registered for the following semester (fee receipt/class schedule)
• show that you are making normal progress toward getting your degree
How will you apply your education in your home country?
• show that you know the job market at home for graduates with your major
• show that you know what companies are hiring students with your major and that you have begun contacting these companies or at least begun research as to which companies you would like to work with
• show that you have discussed with academic advisors how you are going to apply your US education in your country. Letters of support from faculty will be very helpful.
How are you going to pay for your education and living expense in the United States?
• show bank statements, sponsor letters, affidavit of support.
• show that you are aware of the length of time it will take to complete your entire program and you have a continued source of support for the full program.
• for continuing students, you may want to show fee receipts and personal bank account monthly statements which show that university invoices are paid and that there are regular deposits from home into your bank account.
• students who indicate that they intend to work, even legally, to earn part of their expenses in the US are likely to have the visa denied.
What to expect at your interview?
Your interview will be brief and conducted in English. You may want to practice your interview with a friend before making your visa application. You will want to make a favorable impression in the first minute or two of the interview, since the Consul official is under time pressure to conduct a short and efficient interview. Keep your answers short and to the point. Show a positive attitude and do not argue with the Consul official. If you are denied, ask the officer for a list of the additional documents he or she would suggest you provide for your next interview.

How to behave in front of visa officer?????And What kind of Answers can impress him?

You could have low scores or you could have 20 or 30 backlogs , you could have done mistakes in documents, or you could carry fake documents related to finance, degree certificates, property documents. VO job is to make a decision about you in few minutes they have. They might in average talk to you for 3 minutes or so. If you have all the right credentials and you might not get Visa, and someone with fake documents might get Visa, so its that few minutes, you have to present yourself to impress them and get your student visa.
Now, lets assume you are in the queue waiting to be called for the interview.
- When you walk to the window, have a big smile and wish them
- You could say Hi, Hello, Good Morning, Good Evening, anything is fine.

- Eye Contact is must all the times. From the moment you walk-in towards the window, look deep into their eyes and smile and wish them "Hello".
- If you don't make good eye contact, then you are reducing your Visa chances.
- Now, you made good eye contact, then its about how to present your answers.
- I'm sure you should have answers prepared for all possible questions. So, next big thing is "DON'T LIE"
- If you lie, then your entry into U.S.A is not possible for your lifetime. So, don't even think about lying to get Visa.
- Some have mastered the art and the lie they speak will be convincing. If you belong to that category, you have good chances.
- If you are not sure and not comfortable to make up an answer, then DON'T LIE
- Now, you will be convinced and made a decision, not to lie. Then VO asks this question " Who do you plan to do after MS?"
- Majority of student will say answers like this..
" My field is growing in India, I will good job opportunities, when I come back"
" I will work for 1 year in OPT period, gain the experience and come back"
- Let me ask you this, do you really think answers like I will return back to India will suffice them? They know how many student go to U.S. every year, how many return back.
- VO know, why would you have to spend $40,000 for 2 years and come back to India get Rs40,000 per month. They know student will not come back. It will be very few percentage of students return.
- So, for the question, I would answer " After Graduation, I will party hard, and then will look for job" that's simple and straight forward answer.

- The above answer is much different from what you have on your list. But, the above answer will work.
- Next, for the question related to finance documents, make sure you know the source of each funds in the bank statement. VO will ask about transactions, only if they feel something might be wrong in the finance documents.
- In general, it will be like
Who is your sponsor?
What does sponsor do?
How much is his/her income?

Student visa General Doubts
• Can i attend visa interview with out my Final year results?

Yes, u can attend. But u need to have course completion certificate.
• Can i book visa slot in emergency appointment.?

Yes, if it is the first time attending to visa interview with out any hesitation you can book emergency visa appointment. Students or exchange visitors who are within 120 days of their start date of a valid programme and who have not been refused a visa within the last six months.
• My visa was rejected, can i attend for visa immediately?

if your visa gets rejected, you can apply for a visa at any time after getting a new HDFC receipt.

• What are the types of student visas?

There are two non-immigrant visa categories for persons wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is for pursuing academic studies and/or language training programs, and the "M" visa is for non-academic or vocational studies.

• How early should I apply for my Student (F1 or M1) visa?

You are encouraged to apply for your non-immigrant student visa at the earliest. To ensure you get an early and timely date you may apply at anytime, however a student visa may be issued no more than 120 days prior to the start date mentioned on your I-20.

• I have received my Student visa, when should I travel?

Students (F1 or M1) may travel within 30 days of the commencement of the course of study as stated on your I-20 regardless of how early your visa was issued.

• What is the SEVIS system and how does it affect me?

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) program requires schools and exchange programs to verify the enrolment status of all continuing and new foreign students and exchange visitors. However the visa cannot be issued until your SEVIS fee has been paid.

Applicants applying with I-20 forms processed after 1 Sept 2004 are required to provide the SEVIS I-901 fee receipt as proof of payment. You can log on to www.ice.gov/sevis for further details.

• Can a person on a visitor visa change his status to student while in the U.S if he/she gets admission to a school and gets a Form I-20?

No. Previously, US law permitted persons entering on tourist, B1/B2 visas to change status to F-1 visas. That is no longer the case. A non-immigrant wishing to study in the US must apply from their country of origin or residence if they wish to study in the US on an F-1 visa

• I have taken a loan from a bank to cover my tuition. Do I still need to show other financial documents?

In such a case, please bring official documents, which verify the loan approval, not just the application. You must prove that funds are immediately available to cover the first year's costs, and show evidence that funds will be available for all subsequent years. Also since Indian banks ordinarily give educational loans of relatively modest amounts, the application must still demonstrate additional liquid assets and any financial documentation you provide should be in support of this. This applies to all student visa applicants

• What documents should I show to prove that I could pay for my education in the US?

There are no specific documents that prove a student is able to pay for his/her education. Bank account statements, pay slips, income tax return statements, employment letters, property documents and chartered accountant statements are the most common documents used to show proof of funds. However, these are only suggested documents. A visa is not assured if you have any or all of these documents.

• Is it required that I pay the first year tuition expenses in advance and show a receipt from the university?

No, paying the tuition expenses in advance is a good way to show proof of funds, but it is NOT a requirement to pay in advance.

• What if I receive an I-20 to a better school?

1. If you have received an I-20 after scheduling your appointment you can change the details up to 2 working days prior to your interview appointment, for interview scheduled at Mumbai Consulate you can change the details up to 5 working days prior to your interview appointment.
2. If you have obtained your visa and need to change the name of the university on your visa, you have to go through the complete process once again by scheduling a new appointment after paying the application fee and service charges.

• Is there a quota for the number of student visas issued each year?

No, all qualified students receive visas.

• I have a valid F2/M2 visa and I have got admission in to a college. Can I use the Drop Box facility?

No, from July 2004 onwards all applicant travelling to the US have to go through the interview process irrespective how many times they have travelled to the US.

• I am applying for an F1/M1 visa and I would like my spouse to travel with me, can he/she apply for a dependant visa (F2/M2) at the same time that I do or must they wait until my visa has been issued?

It is recommend that the spouse and dependent children go for their visas interviews along with the principal applicant

ambrin
Hi,

I think the vo felt that ur grades were low. So to convince her just check if u have scored good marks in any programming papers. If so mention that u scored more in those papers which shows that u r really interested in them.

Also instead of saying that u were feeling sick, tell her the exact illness u had that time(that is in 2nd sem)

If u have scored more in ur last year, it will be an added advantage. Otherwise if u have done any project, paper presentation or any job or any course related to the programming languages of ur interest, tell it to the vo. Even if u have done ur final year project related to programming language of ur interest just mention it.Tell her that in India the education system does not allow u to excel in ur area of interest, but if given a chance in the US u will create revolution in ur field.

Always remember to convince the vo is entirely in ur hand. Dont worry about ur low grades. Just have confidence in urself. Start thinking about everything u have done till now about programming and then list it to the vo.
There is no any specific question asked by the consular during F1 visa interview. But there are some general questions asked. The F1 visa interview questions may be related to any thing that concerns with you and your application. They may ask you about your studies, funds, sponsors, your chosen university, your destination of study or anything.
Some of the sample questions asked by the consular during interview are:
Why do you want to go abroad?
Why have you chosen this university?
Who will sponsor your education?
How will you pay for your stay in US?
Why you want to go to US?
Why don't you study this course at your own country?
Why have you chosen this course?
Who are there in your family?
Who earns in your family?
What do you know about course you've chosen?
What are your hobbies?
Do you intend to work in USA?
What do you know about your university?
What will you do after completion of your studies?
Does anybody from your family stay or study abroad?
How many years do you intend to stay in US?
These are only the sample questions asked during a visa interview by a consular. It is not necessarily required that you be asked any of these questions. However, prepare for these questions properly for F1 visa interview preparation.

Student Visa Interview Preparation Despite having all the documents and meeting all the criteria people often get the refusal. A lot of it depends on the visa interview, whether you successfully get the Visa or not. Here are few tips based on people's experiences and facts.
Now don't get nervous with the word "interview". This is not like a job interview, however this is an important process (for visa seeker) so take it easy with confidence and follow the following tips.
The first essential step toward a successful interview is preparation.
The most important thing that you can carry with you is your self-confidence. Applicants who are well prepared and confident in their responses to the visa officer, are almost always successful in getting a US visa.
General Preparation
• Get some information/general knowledge on what the Visa is all about? What is the process etc.?
• Prepare for the most commonly asked interview questions.
• Be there a little early.
• Ask for a interpreter if you are not conversant or confident with English.
Document Preparation
1. Fill all the forms/applications neatly and completely.
2. Know what you have filled in the form. Many times it happens specially in parents case, where children or sponsors fill out the application and the applicant him/her self doesn't know what information is provided.
3. Provide correct and authentic information.
4. If getting copies for documents make sure the copies are of good quality and readable.
5. Verify the names, date of birth, etc. should match with the information in your passport.
6. Organize your documents in proper logical order:
A well organized and orderly arranged documents can make it easy for you to find the right documents quickly during interview.
Physical Preparation:
Image is often as important as content. What you look like and how you say something are just as important as what you say. So dress up nicely and keep smiling.
Attitude Preparation:
Provide to the point and concise answers. Do not add any thing which is not relevant or not being asked. (In most the cases, this is where people make a mistake, by giving unnecessary and unasked details). The following are some more interview tips:
• Do not argue.
• Do not ask un-necessary questions.
• Be polite.
What the consulate officer is looking for?
The primary goal for the interview is to verify all information presented in the application and to make sure that, you (applicant) has enough ties back in your home country and will come back after your studies in the United States.
Documents and interview/questions are a few ways through which the consulate officer tries to determine the eligibility for the visa grant.
What do "ties" mean?
"Ties" are the aspects of your life that bind you to your place of residence, including family relationships, employment and possessions. In the case of younger applicants who may not have had an opportunity to establish such ties, interviewing officers may look at educational status, grades, the situation of parents, and an applicant's long-range plans and prospects in your home country. As each person's situation is different, there is no set answer as to what constitutes adequate ties.
During the interview:
• Greet the Interviewer when you see him/her at the beginning.
• Communicate clearly and in a comprehensive way.

USA Visa Interview Preparation
________________________________________
When you apply for an F-1 visa at an American embassy or consulate, a consular official will interview you. The interview usually lasts only two or three minutes. It is good to understand that the main purpose of the visa interview is for you to "prove" to the consular officials that you WILL RETURN to your home country after finishing your academic program. Of course, it is impossible to actually prove or know that a person will or will not do something in the future. Thus, the consular official must believe that you will return to your home country, or the visa will not be issued.
You can reassure the consular officials by talking about the things that tie you to your home: family, property, and employment.
Here are some specific suggestions to help you prepare for your visa interview:
1) You need to know and show what you will do with your degree from a U.S. institution (or, if you want to attend an English language program, with your better English) when you return home. You need to have good (plausible) future plans in your own country.
2) It is often very helpful to have a job offer--in writing-- from an employer in your home country promising you a good job or a higher position in the company WHEN YOU RETURN FROM THE U.S.
3) You should know what the job situation is in your field in your home country. With a little research you can find out what the job prospects are. The U.S. consular officials will know about these things, too. It's usually better for you if you can show that you will have good job prospects in your home country after finishing your program in the U.S.
4) You should practice for the interview with friends. The practice interviews should be no more than three minutes long and very unfriendly. While the consular officer will probably be cordial in the real interview, it is best to be prepared for the worst. You should be ready to answer questions such as "Where did you hear about this school?" etc.
If you don't know very much about your chosen school, the consular official will often refuse to give you a visa. Consular officials may think that you are not really planning to go to school but are simply trying to enter the U.S. to work.
5) You should write a "statement of purpose" explaining why you want to go to this particular school and what you hope to do with the knowledge later on IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY.
6) If your financial status is an issue, you may want to pay tuition to the school in advance and present the receipt to the consular official. The offical will almost certainly respect this gesture. Bank loans are NOT good evidence of financial support for students. Consular officials think that people with loans are more likely to seek employment in the U.S. so they can pay back the loan.
7) You should be honest with consular officials at all times. For example, applicants in some countries might not want to show their true financial status because they may be trying to "shield" income from taxes. Thus, their financial statements may not show this "black money" and so may not show enough money for education in the U.S.
But, U.S. consular officals actually don't care at all if your family is hiding income from your own government. They will, however, appreciate your honesty and be much more likely to grant the visa if they know your true financial status.
Conversely, if the consular officals believe that you are lying or have lied in a previous interview--about anything--they will probably not issue the visa.
